CIB officially encourages a select number of international journals. The status of a CIB Encouraged Journal is granted only sparingly and certain strict conditions must be met, including:
- a defined relationship between the Journal and one or more CIB Commissions, who will exercise a preference to publish their output in this Journal
- a clear position of influence on the journal's content and editorial policy by an appointed CIB representative, who in most cases will be the Coordinator of the CIB Commission that has the special relationship
- a concessionary subscription rate for CIB Members
