Newsletter 2011 - 1

From the CIB General Secretariat
Introduction
The first newsletter of the new year provides an annual retrospective overview of CIB activities in the past year. The unique breadth of the CIB programme portfolio is revealed and emphasized by the range of those activities. The active partnerships, the extraordinary number of conferences, the range of publications arising from the work of many enthusiastic Commissions, the range of varied new Commissions, the recent developments in the Encouraged Journals regime and the introduction of a new style of CIB Student Chapter speak of CIB's vibrancy and its ability to review, refresh and adapt itself to new demands. Providing much of the energy for all this activity were the active CIB Commissions for whom the CIB World Building Congress was a special opportunity to show off their work and aspirations. The new concept of international leading organisation as the UN, ECTP and WHO challenging the world research community through this congress was both exiting and again raising the bar for CIB. The economic climate may be dull but interest in CIB's encouragement of journals, co-sponsorship of conferences, and formation of new and exciting forms of student chapters is strong. Notable amongst the co-sponsored conferences held in 2010 was the series of 10 regional Sustainable Building conferences, that took place in venues as different and as far apart as Wellington and Maastricht, and Seoul, Sao Paulo and Amman. This overview shows how busy CIB was in 2010 and how well prepared it is to face the varied and exciting tests that 2011 will undoubtedly bring.I hope you will be inspired by the information summarized here and motivated to make your own contribution to another successful year for CIB. Wim Bakens, Secretary General of CIB.
