TG53 - Postgraduate Research Training in Building and Construction: Mandate Extension

At its meeting in September in Atlanta, USA the CIB Programme Committee extended the TG53 mandate until 2008. The aim of TG53 remains unchanged and is to cooperate and transfer knowledge and experience between built environment research institutes on doctoral research methods and initiatives to increase the level of training received by the involved researchers. TG53 Coordinator Dr. Dilanthi Amaratunga provides a report on the Task Group's main activities in 2005 that includes a description of the main outcome from two workshops: one in April in Salford, UK and one in July in Brisbane, Australia. Future Task Group activities include: meetings in 2006 in Delft, The Netherlands and in Hong Kong, development of guidelines for research training, alignment of events as related to CIB Student Chapters worldwide and setting up an European-Asian cooperation programme. Special features of the Summer School included on-site lectures and both ancient and modern architecture. The organizers are keen to build this into a programme of annual events that aim to improve mutual understandig between Chinese and international students and industry practitioners in China. A focus of this new Board Committee is to support the development of international Student Chapters in their pilot phase. Two new CIB Student Chapter have been established in 2014: one at the Purdue University, in West Lafayette, IN, USA and a Regional Student Chapter for the Sub-Saharan Africa region, together with ASOCSA - Association of Schools of Construction of Southern Africa. From the CIB General Secretariat

The winner of the 2012 CIB Sebestyen Award was the University of Salford. Most remarkable was the series of webinars on Measuring Urban Sustainability organised by the International Student Chapter of Commission W116 - Smart and Sustainable Built Environments. In the course of 2009 one new Student Chapter was established at the School of Houding, Building and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
